Highlands, NC rests upon the laurels of being one of the highest towns east of the Mississippi River with an elevation of 4,118 feet above sea level. Surrounded by a singularly unique temperate rain forest, the weather is pleasant and almost 20° degrees cooler than the surrounding regions. In addition to the many fantastic outdoor activities created by the Nantahala National Forest, Highlands is one of the few towns in Western North Carolina that can boast of such a wide selection of upscale boutiques, fine dining restaurants—with the coveted Wine Spectator Award of Excellence—and local art galleries.
