The town of Saluda is spread over seven hills. From the early 1800s, this was a favorite escape for residents of the low country, and it has kept its historic flavor. Many bed & breakfasts and inns are available, including The Orchard Inn, rated one of the “Top 15 B&Bs to visit again and again” by Arrington’s Bed & Breakfast Journal.

American crafts, including jewelry and fine porcelain are featured at Heartwood Gallery. And just out of town Sweet Earth Mountain offers unusual woodwork pieces and gifts.

Bicyclists from Greenville, SC have made this a favorite destination for years. Called “the bakery run,” cyclists endure a couple of hours of steady climbing, then drop by the Wildflour Bakery to enjoy the famous cinnamon buns and some fresh mountain air. After a pleasant rest, they hop on their bikes to coast most of the way back home. All agree it is worth the trip.

A trip by car is equally rewarding to enjoy the little shops and cafes here. The entire downtown area has been named a National Historic District, and Main Street is designated by the state as a scenic highway. Try the Purple Onion Café for lunch, dinner or Saturday night entertainment.

Friendly and charming, residents of Saluda know they have landed someplace special. Not just any town can celebrate Coon Dog Day each summer with so much style!
