Art and music thrive throughout this community. You will also find fine dining and unique shopping. World-class outdoor activities abound here, from the natural water slide of “Sliding Rock” to the trails and streams of nearby Pisgah National Forest and DuPont State Forest.
Founded in the 1800s, many of the historic buildings have been restored, and the downtown area is quite charming. Antique shops and art galleries line the streets. There are summertime street dances, concerts at the courthouse gazebo and weekly, year-round music jams.
In 1951, a pair of white squirrels was given to a resident here. He gave them to his daughter and one escaped. The owner decided to let the other one free and today the rare breed continues to thrive here. In fact, Brevard has its own celebration, the annual White Squirrel Festival which features great music performances and nutty squirrel activities for children.
Brevard College, with an enrollment of 584 students, is the oldest college or university in Western North Carolina.
