This charming town, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, features unique upscale shopping, a full range of dining opportunities and plenty of outdoor adventure. Blowing Rock got its name from the rock perch over the Johns River Gorge. A tourist attraction since 1933, the strong updraft at this cliff is said to blow back items that have dropped off.
This is also home to the Tweetsie Railroad, a family theme park featuring a three-mile, steam-powered train ride through the mountains. The area offers plenty of cultural offerings, including performances at the Hayes Performing Arts Center and the annual Blue Ridge Celtic Festival.
