Banner Elks' scenic setting inspired Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings to write The Yearling while staying in a cottage at Lees-McRae College. The town was named for the Banner family of pioneers who settled on the Elk River. Surrounded by towering mountains, this is home to winter sports enthusiasts who also enjoy the refreshing summer climate, perfect for exploring Grandfather Mountain and Linville Falls. Lees-McRae College supplies cultural opportunities, and everyone comes out to enjoy the Wooly Worm Festival celebrated each October.
